Tugjinata pusta da ostane
Tugjinata pusta da ostane,
taja od libeto me razdeli.
Taa od libeto me razdeli,
shto go ljubev vreme tri godini.
Site pechalbari si dojdoja,
samo mojeto libe go nema.
Denje-nokje na porti go chekam,
samo placham i na nego mislam.
Kje ve prasham, mladi pechalbari,
dali go vidovte mojto libe?
Dali go vidovte mojto libe
od pechalba doma da si ide?
Na treta godina pismo prati
i mi pishi nema da se vrati.
Ne se vrakja, druga si zaljubil
i za nea toj si se ozhenil.
Tuginata pusta da ostane tekst
Tuginata pusta da ostane,
taja od libeto me razdeli.
Taa od libeto me razdeli,
sto go lubev vreme tri godini.
Site pecalbari si dojdoja,
samo mojeto libe go nema.
Dene-noke na porti go cekam,
samo placam i na nego mislam.
Ke ve prasam, mladi pecalbari,
dali go vidovte mojto libe?
Dali go vidovte mojto libe
od pecalba doma da si ide?
Na treta godina pismo prati
i mi pisi nema da se vrati.
Ne se vraka, druga si zalubil
i za nea toj si se ozenil.
Moge je vervloekt zijn buitenland
Moge je vervloekt zijn, oh buitenland,
omdat je me mijn geliefde afpakt.
Omdat je me mijn geliefde afpakt,
die ik drie jaar lang liefhad.
Alle werkers uit het buitenland komen terug,
maar mijn geliefde is er niet bij.
Dag en nacht wacht ik op hem bij de poort;
May you be damned, oh foreign country
May you be damned, oh foreign country,
because you take away my beloved.
You take away my beloved,
the one I loved three years long.
All the workers come back home from abroad,
but my beloved is not amongst them.
Day and night I wait for him at the gate;
I only can cry and worry about him.
Say, can I ask you young workers from abroad,
did you see my beloved?
Did you see my beloved,
whether he returned from his work abroad?
After three years he sent me a letter
and tells me that he will not return home.
He will not return, because he found another love
and with her he married already.
Commentary by Paul Mulders
This song dates from the time that it was very usual for young men to go abroad and to work there for one or more years. The purpose was to return with an amount of money large enough to start a new and better living in the motherland. Often the “pečalba” (working abroad) ended in an emigration, especially when the young lad became involved with someone in the new country. For security reasons the men travelled and worked in groups and usually there was a leader (sometimes the oldest man) who decided what the group members had to do.
The curse in the first line: “pusta da ostane” is a women’s expression, litterally meaning ‘may you be left alone’. The value of the curse is ‘may you be damned’, but it was not allowed for women to curse with religious subjects and sexually colored language was not used at all in that time.
Soit maudit, oh pays étranger
Soit maudit, oh pays étranger,
car tu m'as enlevé mon Bien-aimé.
Tu m'as enlevé mon Bien-aimé,
